The family of Botham Jean has publicly demanded that congressional candidate Jasmine Crockett cease using his name for political purposes. In an open letter, they criticized Crockett for misrepresenting herself as their attorney, stating, “Botham’s name is not an endorsement you can parade, and his legacy is not a sound bite you can use to garner media coverage.” The family emphasized that Crockett never represented them in matters concerning Botham Jean and described her claims as “absolutely disgusting.” In response, Crockett acknowledged the error on her campaign website and stated it was corrected promptly upon discovery. She expressed that, as a civil rights attorney, she would never intentionally cause distress to any family. The Jean family has taken legal steps by requesting a cease-and-desist letter to prevent further misuse of Botham Jean’s name in Crockett’s political endeavors.
