BET Awards? We still doing that?
For real yo? How much money was on that stage, artists alone and you mean to tell me they’re still dancing like the monkey holding the cup while the man spins the box after 50 years of hip hop? After 50 years?
There is no real hip hop NEWS media. And by news media I don’t mean these Jerry Springer type youtube channels, where is the hip hop CNN, rewind that back, my bad. CNN, fake news, now we do have a lot of that.
In 2023 real hip hop media is dead, nobody’s covering real issues. And I’m not talking about a serious outlet, artist or content creator here or there, I’m talking about an entity or person everyone defers to, like the Source back in the day. Hip Hop is generating billions, where is the hip hop bible, yo? And even with these awards, corporations are dictating and they own the stations and platforms. There is no hip hop Youtube breaking content creators off.
There is no cohesion, no hip hop nation. Can’t tell you what the hip hop nation’s stance on covid, mandates, Ukraine or any of the pressing events happening today. And no I don’t mean any of the rhetoric from any of these political party or nonprofit rappers that are coerced into pushing an agenda.
Hip Hop didn’t tell us who shot Tupac or Biggie. Or Darren Seals. It took Jim Crow Joe needing a HUGE distraction to for an arrest to be made in the murder of Tupac and while there is buzz about whether not Diddy will go down, there is no investigative journalism. No hip hop 60 Minutes. Hip Hop didn’t publicly support Cube’s Contract For Black America or billions offered by Trump. Or Kanye. Or any political stance taken by any artist except those exploiting our votes. Vote or Die. The Hip Hop Summit.
Hip Hop did not break stories about Bam or Russell Simmons. Faaam, I’m talking about legit pieces, that’s not hating although it might get you killed something mainstream media doesn’t have to think about. Nobody’s gonna shoot them over a story.
And faaam, I am guilty of a few of my criticisms, so this ain’t me acting like I was above any of it, but when you know better you do better, riiiiight? This is bigger than hip hop. Where is that award? And no, not referring to grifting assed TK.
